  • Amplifier
    A device that increases a signal’s strength.
  • CAT5
    Cable also called unshielded twisted pair cable (UTP). The type of cable used for Ethernet 10MB and 100 MB LAN connections.
  • Channel
    The frequency band on a television to which a particular video program is assigned.
  • Closed-circuit television (CCTV)
    In some on-demand systems, CCTV is synonymous with the term video on demand (VOD): “A viewer’s ability to request and receive recorded video and sound programming through a television set.”
  • Coaxial cable
    Cable that has an axial design. It is used for high frequencies, such as those in the VHF and UHF television transmission bands.
  • RG-11 coaxial cable
    A type of coaxial cable designed for connectivity in the television-chan­nel spectrum. It consists of a single, solid copper center conductor surrounded by low-loss insulating foam, which is enclosed in a wire mesh shield and an outer insulating layer.
  • Combiner
    A component that pools various video channels to produce a single broad­band video signal for distribution throughout a hospital facility.
  • DTMF
    Developed at Bell Labs, now the world standard for analog telephone dialing. Incorporates an array of discrete voice frequencies that are combined in sets of two to produce “multi-frequencies” that are unique to each of the 12 keys on the telephone keypad.
  • Electromagnetic compatibility (EMC)
    The ability of various kinds of electromagnetic-field-generating devices to coexist without one device causing interference with another device.
  • Graphical user interface (GUI)
    A user-friendly interface based on graphics (icons and pictures and menus) instead of text; uses a mouse as well as a keyboard as an input device.
  • HDD
    Hard disk drive.
  • Host computer
    The central component of an on-demand system that makes possible communication, education, messaging, and on-demand video.
  • Hot swap
    A feature that lets critical components of the system be changed while the system is running without affecting system operation.
  • Marquee
    Specialized videos that contain information specific to your medical facil­ity. Marquees play when no other videos are playing and they are interrupted when another video begins to play.
  • Modulator
    A component that selectively channels video and audio information from the video streaming device (VSD).
  • M2P
    The file extension Canopus DVStorm used for digitally encoded files.
  • MPEG-1
    Standard specification targeted for use with computers, computer games, and set-top boxes.
  • MPEG-2
    Standard targeted for use in high bandwidth broadcast applications.
  • Operating system (OS)
    The software that operates the computer by providing routines and instructions that determine how the computer behaves under all operating conditions.
  • Prescriptive play
    A program that a healthcare provider orders for a patient. The patient receives an automated call with instructions on how to view the program.
  • Scheduled play video
    A video scheduled to play at specified time.
  • Uninterruptible power supply (UPS)
    An alternate, battery-operated power source that provides temporary power when the main power source stops working.
  • Unshielded twisted-pair cable (UTP)
    The type of cable used for Ethernet 10 MB and 100 MB LAN interconnections. This cable is sometimes referred to as CAT5 cable.
  • Video encoding
    The process of converting analog video signals to compressed digital video,
  • Video file server
    Stores and plays video content on demand or as scheduled.
  • Video on demand (VOD)
    A viewer’s ability to request and receive recorded video and sound programming through a television set.
  • Video streaming device (VSD)
    The video file server that houses the digital video files7
