Heart Attack

Heart Attack

According to the Centers for Disease Control, over 730,000 post-MI patients were discharged from hospitals in 2004. With that in mind, Milner-Fenwick has released three new programs in our cardiology library.  Two in-facility programs, Signs and Symptoms of a Heart Attack and Recovering from a Heart Attack:  Preparing to Leave the Hospital, and a take-home video, After a Heart Attack: Recovering at Home, have been produced.

“This series forms a learning foundation for heart attack patients,” said Richard Milner, Vice President of Production and Product Development.  “They provide viewers with strategies for self-managing their disease, and teaches them the skills that will not only help in their MI recovery, but help to prevent a subsequent attack.”

Milner explains, “As a series, it was important for us to release these three programs simultaneously. They provide specific and targeted information for patients at highest risk – those with heart disease that need to be aware of MI symptoms; those just being discharged from the hospital after having had an MI; and patients who have just returned home to recover and must identify and change their lifestyle behaviors.”

In related news, a new set of rehabilitation standards for patients recovering from serious cardiac events has been put together by the American Association of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation, the American College of Cardiology, and the American Heart Association. This is based on evidence that cardiac rehabilitation is extremely beneficial in reducing the risk of a second event, yet less than 30% if eligible patients participate in programs.

Healthy Lifestyle

Two new programs in our General Health library have been updated and given a fresh look.

Quit Smoking

Smoking: Getting Ready to Quit features new nicotine and non-nicotine replacement therapies, and highlights the healthy lifestyle change approach to quitting smoking. In addition to learning about nicotine’s effects on the brain and the body, patients will see others demonstrate healthy behavioral change techniques such as identifying their personal reasons for both smoking and wanting to quit, goal-setting, diary-keeping, triggers, coping strategies, and overcoming common barriers. The importance of choosing and working toward a “quit date” is emphasized, and the potential for relapse is addressed.

Cathy Turner, Director of Health Promotions at Virginia Hospital in Arlington, VA was one of the professional evaluators on this program’s review panel prior to its release. “I think this is a very good overview,” she wrote. “I like the fact it stresses the importance of using behavior modification along with quitting smoking aids.”

Joni Colle, Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation Nurse at the Memorial Medical Center in Springfield IL, also an evaluator, replied that this program is “better than any other we’ve used.”

To help patients in need of encouragement after a relapse, look for our future release of Smoking: Lifestyle Changes to Staying Quit. Through real patient testimony, animation and a review of methods and tips to help stay quit, this program will reinforce strategies that can lead your patients toward a smoke-free future.

Stress!

Our popular Living with Stress program is also now in its second edition.  We’ve replaced the old scripted vignettes shown in the older version with footage of real patients identifying their stressors, and demonstrating healthy stress management techniques.  The program highlights the important differences between damaging short-term stress relievers such as overeating, drinking and smoking. As an alternative, it strongly promotes healthier methods including positive self-talk, relaxation methods, visualization, biofeedback, and prayer.
