Diabetes Home Video

Diabetes Home Video Guide

Type 2 Diabetes Home Video Guide: Skills for Self-Care, produced in collaboration with the AADE, has been released. According to producer Carrie Beaudoin, over 60% of the 2-hour program is new content. “There’s more emphasis on lifestyle changes including a new chapter on setting short-term and long-term goals. Also the medication section has a lot of new up-to-date content and the importance of A1c testing is stressed.”

Unlike previous editions created for VHS, this new version was designed to take advantage of the DVD format. Patients can access any chapter or even a specific topic in a sub-chapter in seconds. There are wrap-up questions and suggested activities at the end of each chapter to get patients more involved.

Diabetes PowerPoint Unit

Diabetes PowerPoint Slide Show

The popular PowerPoint presentation, An Overview of Diabetes and its Management, has been updated with the release of its third edition. Produced in collaboration with the AADE, this unit has been expanded to 118 slides. It includes 5 new slides plus revisions to 24 slides and 20 of the leader’s notes.

Michelle Sheldon-Rubio, RN, BSN, CDE, of the Joslin Diabetes Center in Baltimore, MD served as content consultant for this edition. She explains, “Our main goal was to provide imagery and updated explanations of all the new medications used today. We also kept the diabetes educator in mind by providing lots of background information in the leader’s notes. This is an excellent teaching tool for people at risk and those already diagnosed with diabetes.”

Previous buyers of the unit are entitled to a free exchange or a substantial discount based on their original date of purchase. The Spanish version has also been updated.

Diabetes

Diabetes

The core group of diabetes video programs covering medications has been updated with the most current information and options including Taking Insulin, Understanding Insulin, and Understanding Insulin and Amylin. All references to Exubera have been eliminated from these programs.

Other programs that have been revised include What is Diabetes? (Type 2), Diabetes Foot and Skin Care, and Preventing Long-Term Complications.

JoAnne Nabozny, Milner- Fenwick’s product development director explains, “These updated releases represent our commitment to maintaining our diabetes library as the premier educational resource for diabetes educators.”

Smoking

Quit Smoking

Smoking: Getting Ready to Quit was updated in 2007. It features new nicotine and non-nicotine replacement therapies, and highlights the healthy lifestyle change approach to quitting smoking.

A new companion to this program has been released, Smoking: Staying Quit. This program takes patients past the first step of quitting and gives them the skills to staying quit for good. Producer Lee Ricketts explains, “One of the things we stress in this program is that a misstep doesn’t have to lead to a relapse. It’s important for someone not to give up because of one mistake.” An underlying theme is the importance of staying committed to your goal if you expect to succeed in staying an ex-smoker.

Pneumonia

Diabetes PowerPoint

According to the CDC, 1.4 million people were hospitalized for pneumonia in 2005 and typically spent 5 days in the hospital. Two programs have been released by Milner-Fenwick to expedite the recovery of pneumonia patients.

Pneumonia: Diagnosis and Treatment gives patients an understanding of what pneumonia is, how they got it, and possible treatments they’ll receive. There are two versions, Pneumonia: Diagnosis and Treatment (non-invasive procedures) and Pneumonia: Diagnosis and Treatment (invasive andnon-invasive treatments). Producer Lee Ricketts felt it was important to kept the content as simple and as brief as possible. “These patients aren’t feeling well, so we broke the program down into very brief chapters of only a few minutes each. One goal was to show them how they can be proactive in their recovery.”

Pneumonia: Recovery and Prevention can be shown to patients prior to discharge. It gives home care recovery guidelines and stresses keeping follow-up appointments, taking medications as directed, and staying away from other sick people. The program also covers lifestyle changes to help prevent future occurrences and patients learn how to keep an eye out for symptoms before they escalate.

Newborn Care

Newborn Care

The home video, First Days Home, Keeping Your Baby Healthy and Happy, has been revised for 2008. In addition to content changes, new art gives the program a new contemporary look.

Chester County Hospital in West Chester, Pennsylvania has been giving copies of First Days Home to new parents for the last eight years. Sue Bechhold, RN, MSN is Coordinator of Women’s Health Education Services. She relates, “When new parents leave the hospital, they’re overwhelmed. We give them books, but many people are visual learners. They can watch the DVD at home at their leisure and since the program is broken into chapters, they can pick and choose what they want to watch. Big concerns are always feeding and bathing. They can even share it with their babysitter.”

Postpartum: Caring for Yourself after Delivery and Newborn Care have both been revised to include new art and revised content. The postpartum program focuses on the needs and changes for the mother and provides lots of practical tips. Newborn Care has new information on umbilical cord care and car seat safety

Heart Attack

Cardiac Rehabilitation

Cardiac Rehabilitation is an upcoming release that replaces an older program in our library on this subject. The program is divided into three sections covering time spent in the hospital, the next 12 weeks in recovery at home, and long term maintenance. “Viewers learn that cardiac rehabilitation is a positive first step in recovering from a heart attack,” says producer Carrie Beaudoin. “It also helps patients set goals to reduce risk factors to prevent another heart attack.”

Three other new programs have been released in our cardiology library including two in-facility programs, Signs and Symptoms of a Heart Attack and Recovering from a Heart Attack:  Preparing to Leave the Hospital, and a take-home video, After a Heart Attack: Recovering at Home.

Health Tools

Milner-Fenwick is distributing Health Tools, a self-tutorial series in Flash format produced by The Cleveland Clinic. It includes Diabetes Health Tools, a 7-part series, Managing Stress Health Tools, a 4-part series, and Stop Smoking Health Tools, a 2-part series. Educators can provide access from a desktop PC or provide system wide access through their in-facility intranet. Because Health Tools are self-tutorials, they’re ideal for delivery on any healthcare website.
