What’s New at Milner-Fenwick

Many health educator friends stopped by our booth at the AADE Annual Meeting held in Atlanta in early August. We had four lucky winners of patient education programs in our daily drawings. They included:
- Eileen Duffy of Keene, NH
- Sharon Iliohan of Madisonville, KY
- Alyssa Bixler of Columbus, OH
- Anna Beth Ingle of Murray, KY
Karen Lindsley of Lawrenceville, GA was the winner of our videos in the AADE Silent Auction. Her generous donation will support the AADE Scholarship Fund.

Newly diagnosed diabetes patients often feel overwhelmed with the life changes necessary to control their blood sugar. The updated version of Basic Skills for Controlling Diabetes shows them the basic steps to manage their self-care
“We were looking for a way to connect with this audience, so we present these lessons through the experiences of Barbara, a newly diagnosed patient,” says producer Carrie Beaudoin. “The program provides a positive, reassuring message for new patients so they can begin controlling their diabetes.”
It shows patients how to make daily lifestyle changes in diet and exercise as well as educating them on medication scheduling and testing their blood sugar.

About 16 million new cases of depression occur in this country each year and more than a third of those people never receive treatment. It doesn’t have to be that way and two new programs can help.
Recognizing Depression and Treating Depression educate viewers to let go of the stigma often attached to depression according to producer Lee Ricketts. Many sufferers, particularly men, don’t seek treatment because they see it as a weakness. Ricketts says, “These programs stress that it’s not a weakness, just something that you need to get help with.”
Recognizing Depression equips its viewers to recognize signs and symptoms. Treating Depression gives patients a roadmap of the journey they will travel to manage their depression, presenting common types of treatment including psychotherapy and medication. Viewers learn just because the first treatment may not work, they shouldn’t give up. Ricketts notes, “Viewers learn that with medication and psychotherapy, there is help and hope.”

“COPD – Take Control shows patients how to take control so they manage COPD instead of it managing them,” says producer Lee Ricketts. The program outlines specific breathing techniques plus the importance of taking medication and quitting smoking.
“We use computer animation to show how uncontrolled emphysema and bronchitis affect the lungs and breathing. This is especially helpful for patients who comprehend visual instruction best,” notes Ricketts. “With the self-management skills presented in the program, patients can better live life on their own terms.”

According to the American Heart Association, coronary heart disease is the leading cause of death in the US. In fact over 445,000 deaths were directly attributable to it in 2005 alone.
For that reason What is Coronary Artery Disease? is relevant to a very broad audience, especially newly diagnosed or high risk patients. This program shows how atherosclerosis progresses and its affect on the heart. CAD patients share their experiences as part of the program’s emphasis on lifestyle changes.

Being informed is critical for the safety of patients taking Warfarin, the leading anticoagulant drug. This medication has potentially dangerous risks, side effects, and interactions. That’s why Milner-Fenwick recently acquired Warfarin, What Patients Need to Know produced by New York-Presbyterian Hospital.
This program presents medications and supplements that interact with Warfarin and cautions about using commonly available vitamin and herbal supplements. Other vital topics include:
• common side effects
• physical symptoms indicating a trip to the emergency room
• precautionary steps to prevent bleeding
• the INR test regulating Warfarin dosages
The program comes with a supporting PDF handout that educators can share with their patients.

Milner-Fenwick is now distributing 2 teen-oriented programs produced by Human Relations Media, Teen Depression: Signs, Symptoms and Getting Help and AIDS Update: The Latest Facts about HIV and AIDS.
In Teen Depression, teens from diverse backgrounds speak directly to the viewer about their battles with depression and their paths to recovery. Through their real-life stories, the video stresses that depression is a treatable medical illness, not a personality flaw. It also explains how to distinguish between clinical depression and normal sad feelings.
AIDS Update reviews precautionary measures that reduce the risk of HIV infection. The video addresses teens’ frequently asked questions and provides an explanation of the FDA-approved, rapid-results HIV test kit. It also covers the most crucial facts about a positive test result.
If your facility has developed any patient education materials that would be of value to other healthcare providers, contact Milner-Fenwick for possible distribution. Call (800) 432-8433.
