Quality of care issues are getting a lot of attention from hospitals these days especially because of accreditation requirements and rules for government compensation. For this reason, Milner-Fenwick has released a new 3-part Hospital Quality of Care series.
Patient Safety: Stay Safe While You Are in the Hospital covers safety strategies that include reducing falls, improving hand washing, and tracking meal trays and medications. Patients learn in Advance Directive: Taking Control that with pre-planning, they can have some degree of control if they become too ill or injured to convey their wishes. Pain Management: It’s Your Right stresses the importance for patients to communicate their pain level to healthcare providers, and explains patients’ rights about pain management.

Updated release, Diabetes: Being Prepared for Sick Days and Emergencies covers issues that patients don’t think about first when they start learning how to manage their diabetes. The program emphasizes the importance of developing a sick day plan with one’s diabetes care team in the event of an illness, infection, or injury.
“We also added a new section on emergency planning. Typically, people don’t plan for events like hurricanes, floods, power outages, or blizzards until the last minute,” observes producer Carrie Beaudoin. “But planning ahead for these kinds of events is especially important for people with diabetes.”
The program gives detailed information on supply kit preparation and what to do when illness or emergency situations are at hand.
Stroke
Stroke: Reducing Your Risk was developed because according to the National Stroke Association, “Stroke is the third leading cause of death in America and a leading cause of adult disability. Up to 80% of strokes are preventable.”
Consultant Connie Parliament, RN is Clinical Program Director of Neuroscience Services with the Michigan Stroke Network. She says this program is an important resource for educators because many potential stroke victims are uninformed when it comes to newer treatments and medication, including clot-busting drugs.
After a Stroke will help stroke survivors and their families learn to cope with their condition and live as full a life as possible after the event. The patients appearing in the program were chosen for their positive attitude and their progress. Even though each stroke and the recovery timeline is different, the focus is on patient empowerment.

An updated version of Living with Asthma lets patients know that if they take their medications properly, avoid triggers, and monitor their peak flow daily, they can control their condition much more safely and effectively.
According to producer Lee Ricketts, “Patients are taught if they take their controller medication daily, they shouldn’t need to use quick relief medications as frequently.”
“We also stress monitoring their peak flow every day. Viewers learn that their peak flow will help tell them how well they are controlling their asthma, may give advanced warning of an attack, and provide valuable data for their healthcare provider.”
