The 2010 American Association of Diabetes Educators meeting took place in San Antonio, Texas. It’s great to see old friends and make new ones over the course of the meeting. Our daily prize drawings for free patient education resources included three lucky winners:
- Andrea Gebhart, RN of the MacNeal Diabetes Center in Riverside, IL
- Joyce Dodge, RN of Lima Memorial Professional Group in Lima, OH
- Gloria Steelman, RN of Healthnicity of Burleson, TX
Patient handouts can be a budget buster if you have to maintain inventory on many different subject areas. That doesn’t even address the management issues of storage and tracking inventory. An economical and user friendly alternative is the new Library of Diabetes Patient Handouts on CD-ROM covering 159 topics in 10 key subject areas.
This is the 2nd edition of this AADE approved product. More than half the pages have been updated to include the latest medications and newest guidelines for your diabetes patients. Because everything is on the CD-ROM, any handout you need is a click away. If you need large quantities for a class, create a master and make copies on your copy machine. Or if you want to e-mail one to a patient, all the handouts are in PDF format.

Type 2 Diabetes and Exercise 3rd Edition has been totally redone. “We wanted to create a program with strong motivational messages for patients,” says producer Carrie Beaudoin. The program is divided into 3 themes; start an exercise routine, pick something you like to do, and do it safely. The program includes the latest exercise guidelines and covers the importance of a stress test for those at greater risk for heart disease. In addition there’s a full chapter on preventing and treating hypoglycemia.
Pre-Diabetes: It’s Time to Make Changes, 2nd Edition is a new update. Beaudoin explains, “To greater emphasize the role of exercise, we added a patient recently diagnosed with pre-diabetes and follow her efforts to start exercising.” The program also covers making health food choices, taking prescribed medications, and monitoring blood glucose with one’s healthcare provider. A1C testing as a diagnostic tool is included.

According to producer Lee Ricketts, “We felt that Anticoagulant Medication: Taking it Safely was an important program to make because anyone taking this medication must be informed about its proper use, risks, and precautions.”
It explains the necessity of regular INR testing to create the proper medication balance for every patient. “We also get into vitamin K precautions, safety tips to reduce the risk of bleeding, and we remind patients to carry a medical ID card or wear a bracelet in case of emergencies.”

Turn a negative into a positive by providing healthy lifestyle messages to patients in your waiting room. HealthClips for the Waiting Room: Heart Disease and Risk Factor Reduction has been released as an alternative to our popular waiting room DVD covering wellness and disease prevention. This 2 hour program offers 33 video clips covering heart disease risk factors, heart attack, angina, cardiac rehab, heart failure, angioplasty, and lifestyle issues. The clips are interspersed with 10 health messages appropriate for public areas of any facility. And the 3 minute clips are short enough even if a patient’s time in the waiting room is brief.
Our new digital friendly product line, HealthClips, is expanding to over 400 clips with the June 2010 release of 50 new videos:
• Stroke (12 clips)
• Asthma (30 clips)
• Anticoagulants (5 clips)
