Living with Heart Failure: A Home Video Guide has been released to reduce hospital readmissions and keep heart failure patients on track. This home reference video resource provides essential self-care guidelines for patients at hospital discharge or for those attenting heart failure classes. Nancy Mannion, RN, Team Leader Preventative Cardiology at St. Agnes Hospital in Baltimore, MD says, "Putting real patients in the video is huge. Being able to see someone else who has gone through what they are going through is very beneficial."
These new products are part of the growing Heart Failure Library along with five in-facility videos averaging 15 minutes in length. The titles are:
• What is Heart Failure?
• Heart Failure: Managing Day to Day
• Heart Failure: Nutrition and Exercise
• Heart Failure: Medications
• Heart Failure: Leaving the Hospital
Heart Failure: Take Control for a Healthier Life (formerly called Congestive Heart Failure), our popular 16-page booklet has just updated. It's an ideal take-home summary for newly diagnosed patients and their caregivers. In addition, it fulfills the Joint Commission’s Heart Failure National Inpatient Quality Measures for providing heart failure patients with written instructions and educational materials on required topics at discharge. These include activity level, diet, discharge medications, follow-up appointment, weight monitoring, and what to do if symptoms worsen. The medication section now gives patients an overview of all types of medications including ACE inhibitors and angiotensin receptor blockers (ARBs), beta blockers, diuretics, aldosterone antagonists, and digitalis. A key theme, quitting smoking, is brought to the front of the booklet for greater emphasis.
MyPlate
Milner-Fenwick is revising its nutrition programs adding the new USDA MyPlate icon and 2010 Dietary Guidelines for Americans. MyPyramid references are being removed. Three in-facility videos and eight HealthClips will include the new MyPlate approach as an important tool in making healthy food choices. In-facility program Overweight: Who's in Control? has been released. Nutrition: Healthy Eating for Life and Diabetes and Nutrition: Eating for Health will be released in February 2012.

New Videos to Educate Patients on Regulatory, Quality of Care Issues
As part of our on-going commitment to produce content to fulfill your need for regulatory and patient safety programming, 4 new videos in our Hospital Quality of Care (QOC) series are now in production:
• Taking Your Medications Safely
• Your Role in Infection Control
• Understanding Your Discharge Plan
• Fall Prevention in the Hospital and at Home
These new DVDs, averaging 15 minutes, are expected for release in February 2012. They will join others currently in the QOC series: Patient Safety, Pain Management, Advance Directive, Anti-coagulants, and Pneumonia.
"Our Hospital Quality of Care series has been a priority for us as we produce programs that educate patients on their roles relevant to the National Patient Safety Goals and requirements for discharge planning," says David Milner, Milner-Fenwick President. "It helps patients understand the importance of taking a pro-active role in their hospital experience. Knowing that, they can help prevent adverse outcomes and hospital re-admissions."
